just in case someone might have forgotten: stil vor talent is based in berlin. and this ep by sascha braemer, one part of heinrich & hirtenfellner, proves just that. braemer, whos just been at the top of everybodys dj charts with his funk-laden minimal soul piece >mamba drums< on kindisch records, has donated three tracks to oliver koletzkis imprint that mirror what this city is best know for: funky minimal grooves. first up there is >ghost track< a typical dry minimal loop with a rhythmically in touch vocal sample that is then juxtaposed by a simply astonishing piece of melody. goose bumps and groove humps on the floor - guaranteed! on the flip: >girl<. here braemer has created a dubby piece of tech house that floats towards a soulful vocal and some beautiful strings. this is one for the early morning, or in berlin, the late afternoon, those times when everything seems in perfect harmony with each other. last up is >guitar man<, yet another very sample-based stripped down loop with one riff of an echoed guitar being the protagonist. when that riff is fully played out, we all know its summer. but it wouldnt be berlin if there werent some dark wobbly basslines seemingly destroying this but in fact creating the perfect combination of soft and hard, of light and dark. on top of this the vocal sample >i wont leave< perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the praised berlin afterhour. stil vor talent is back at home with this ep.

son of sound aka henry maldonado has been a fixture on his native new york house scene since his first strictly rhythm release way back in 1992. with releases on henry street, emotive and cutting, amongst others, its no surprise to find big apple funk running strong through this, son of sounds three track tirk debut, full of rolling percussion, hypnotic riffs, downtown disco and artschool funk.

the talents of japanese orchestral arranger yukari yamashita are present once more to pen an orchestral arrangement of symphonic cinematic proportion with a hint of baroque flavour, within a subtle eastern twist. and if then add their special blend of slamming beats, sonics and out there fx. a hypnotic pizzicato line develops into a full blown orchestral melody, whilst three dimensional sounds seamlessly elevate the listeners spirit whereas the bass and beats keep your feet firmly grooving on the ground.

after summer 2008s three-month, international tour (highlighted by performances at both pitchfork and roskilde festivals), extra golden settled down to record the follow-up to their acclaimed hera ma nono. the result is thank you very quickly, a six-song wonder of a record whose joyous danceable anthems were crafted in the wake of political and economic upheaval in kenya.

the new, first time ever on vinyl 2lp reissue of a long way around to a shortcut is somehow a greatest hits of the golden not quite decade of sic alps. well, not quite golden, either. can gold be tarnished? can it be done on purpose? if so, sic alps are artisans of the highest order - for their music is the bright, surging sound of ye olde rock & roll radio (and the garages that tuned in) heard through air darkened with specks of nameless obstruction. in and amongst their ingrown sounds, sic alps take on classic tunes from strapping field hands, throbbing gristle and the zipps on a long way around to a shortcut. it is to their credit that they completely absorb their estimated predecessors and create the only sound left to them: the sound of the sic alps. a long way around to a shortcut was issued as a cd in 2008. it collected songs that were first issued throughout the epic years of 2006 and 2007 on two 12inch eps, three 7inch singles and a cassette, plus a song from a compilation cd r and a song exclusive to this compilation. the records were originally given titles like united, strawberry guillotine, semi streets, hip hop sweepers vol 1, teenage alps, and the soft tour in rough form, but all these original releases are long gone.

trademark is the collaboration of tony reeves and tundra records labelmate loki. formed in 2000, the trademark project blends electronic studio craft with the live influence of their years playing jazz. trademarks output ranges from chillout through breakbeat to deep house and even drum and bass, but always with the fusion of deep jazzy chords, rolling beats and searing synths that define their style. this year sees the pair return to their roots with some deep, tech-house grooves for the discerning clubber.
ia stands for 4/4 beats and the label starts with a bang with three great and quite different 4/4 tracks for many deep and tech floors, and tropic of capricorn for more chilled moments. elevator is crisp deep/tech house which slowly builds and just rocks! with a wicked solid deep bassline too that keeps things really groovy. jack o diamonds also has that clean crisp sound and groovy bass with synth stabs and lots of funk for loads of different dancefloors. its a bit more upbeat than elevator and also has wicked deep bass to keep peeps movin! saturn 5 is deeper, darker, subtle and just a massive deep phat sound which is totally awesome on any decent system, wonderful deep textures and pads - just really lush. tropic of capricorn is a deep detroity broken beat track that compliments the others. crisp production again and not too cluttered, it does what it needs to and works in many different situations.

thanks to the blinding fabric live mix and a series of highly entertaining interviews the demand for new omar-s product is now at an all time high. hes on top form here with three fresh cuts representing his sound to the fullest. opening track flying blind is a must have for fans of the deeper omar s tracks like psychotic photosynthesis. following that up is still serious nic which is probably my favourite track on the record, its got that heavily monged out raw omar-s machine vibe to it. things straighten out a bit on the b-side thanks to the smoothed out vocal house of left him up. then it finishes off with the deep house of flying gorgars. once again omar-s proves hes too steps ahead of the deep house pack. essential

in the sequence of numbers the seventh follows the sixth blow. this one is the first ever solo release by daniel d. curtis featuring three tracks. a sides first minutes already forebode the expressiveness of before we come. with well known techno structures in the background the magical spheres literally embrace and motivate every summer lover to a hip swing. after the first zweikarakter contributions and remixes, which are on pt006 (bachner & biereige - home summer) there is nothing more to mention than to listen, feel, and the artists request to get paid.
